The Jack Petchey Foundation

The Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme is the flagship programme of the Jack Petchey Foundation and it currently operates across 2000 different schools, groups and organisations within London and Essex. The scheme contributes millions of pounds each year and to date has donated over £100million to support youth programmes.

The Achievement Award Scheme aims to enable schools, colleges and youth organisations to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of their young people. Jack Petchey CBE wants young people to raise their aspirations, believe in themselves and make a contribution to their society. Achievement Awards are designed to recognise a wide range of achievements. It is not just about being clever, or gifted, but about putting the effort in and doing your best. The success of the Award Scheme arises from empowering young people to nominate their peers and select the Achievement Award winner. The award winner also chooses how their award money is to be spent.

Aspire nominated Marina for the Jack Petchey Foundation award. In co-ordination with the Young Harrow Foundation a panel of young people assessed the nominee’s and selected the winners.

Marina came to Aspire in 2016 aged 12 with a spinal infection, which meant she was a wheelchair user and unable to walk.

Part of Marina’s physiotherapy included weekly sessions on our FES bike (Functional electrical stimulation). 2 years later, Marina is back to full health, walking again and has donated her standing frame from home to Aspire Leisure Centre (which supports people with spinal cord injuries). Marina has a fantastic relationship with the staff at Aspire and it has been really rewarding to see her grow and achieve her goals.

With the money received from the award, Marina has bought the fitness team an IPad which will be used to help the team engage with younger gym members by increasing their social media usage. The IPad will also be used to help demonstrate fitness techniques by using special apps as well making bookings a lot easier.

Dean Tearle – Centre Manager said: “It is fantastic that Marina has been recognised in this way and it has been great watching her use the centre and make use of the specialist equipment and services we have to offer.”

Well done Marina!
