Overshoe(less) November! Coming this November! Aspire spends on average over £1,600 on overshoes each year. These are a single-use plastic and cannot be recycled. There is also very little evidence that these keep our changing rooms clean, especially when customers wear them around the centre and car park, then back in again. So for November, we are trialling the removal of overshoes from our changing rooms. Please help us by: Removing your outdoor footwear before entering the changing rooms Bring flip flops or a pair of pool shoes with you Ensure your flip flops or pool shoes are clean before entering the changing rooms Aspire will: Spend this month’s overshoes budget on an extra four hours of cleaning per week Ensure our staff are regularly checking and cleaning the floors when possible We are currently working towards achieving the ISO14001 accreditation through the British Assessment Bureau in a bid to become more environmentally friendly, reduce our waste and carbon footprint. We have two environmental champions (Leigh Hewitt and Declan Cronin) who have led the charge and implemented some fantastic ideas such as the LED lights around the centre, new UV light which reduces the amount of chemicals required in the pool, environmental training for the team as well as a regular night audit to see what equipment is being left on. On the 1st November we are also working with Basilan to introduce a 5p charge for the use of take-away cups. This is to encourage customers, staff and visitors to bring their own with them, following on from the great works Starbucks have done and we have already done away with plastic straws! Dean Tearle - Centre Manager says "It is really important that everyone does their bit to help protect the environment and I am so happy to see the team being engaged and willing to look at what changes we can make as an organisation".
